According to the Oxford dictionary, it is a coat or cloak made from a waterproof material of rubber and cloth. It was created by a certain Charles Macintosh (note there is no “k" in his name) in 1823 and it has been in use ever since, although now on a much lower scale.

The mackintosh is still hand made in the UK by coatmakers who have handed down their craft over nearly 200 years to successive generations right up to the present time.

RIDING MACS
